"UNDERDOG" SONG BY AREA ACTOR SUITS EAGLES ONCE AGAIN

DATE:  Jan. 9, 2019
Philadelphia, PA

As the Philadelphia Eagles head toward their next playoff game, a song written and performed by an area actor-singer resonates even more.

That song is "Underdog," by Leonard Dozier.

It might seem that "underdog" is an expression of pride in the Eagles -- who in February 2018 won their first Super Bowl ever.

But Dozier, who has released four albums and a dozen singles, didn't write the song with the Eagles or the Super Bowl in mind. "Underdog" debuted in April 28 as he was interviewed on the Q on Fox29, inspired in general by "people who are disillusioned and disenfranchised, as a pick-me-up song."

But the connection to the Eagles seems obvious -- A video with clips of the Eagles, interwoven with Dozier's soundtrack, followed in the summer of 2018, after the team's Super Bowl win.

"The song seems to be a theme of the team, which really rises as an underdog and wears underdog masks," said Dozier. "It seems again, as they continue in the playoffs, that the football gods are on their side."

Dozier's association with the Eagles was serendipitous, almost like an "alignment," he said. An experienced voice actor as well as stage actor, Dozier narrated the Super Bowl highlights in a half-hour documentary for NFL Films Presents.

An ADDY-award winner for his voice work, Dozier noted other expressions of that "alignment." He received an invitation to attend a gala last June to announce the formation of a new Faith and Liberty Museum in Philadelphia. The Eagles' head coach, Doug Pedersen, was the speaker. Then, at a mentoring event in which Dozier participated, one of the panelists was former Eagle player Hollis Thomas.

In September 2017, Dozier was added to the Eagles roster of voice talents.

Add the fact as a young man Dozier dreamed of becoming an athlete, adding: "I never thought I'd go into the arts."

Now, in part, thanks to his association with the Philadelphia Eagles, he at least has a taste of being involved in sports.
"Underdog" is on Dozier's new album, "Sunday Word," released in October 2018.

Catch Leonard Dozier's Inspirational Keynote Speech at the New Jersey Conference on Tourism

My keynote speech from yesterday at the New Jersey Conference on Tourism left an incredible incredible impact. I can't even begin to describe it to all of you. I’m incredibly thankful to the dignitaries present and the treatment my wife and I received and to the opportunities that were presented to me along with sentiments about a run for office. NOPE LOL don't see that folks....but I also didn’t see keynote speaking either. I’m reminded that the good Lord laughs at our plans.

A few minutes ago I received a message from the Director of Marketing and Public Relations who booked me who stated:

Hi Leonard,

Just wanted to let you know that the Executive Director of the NJ Division of Travel & Tourism referenced your speech in his presentation this morning. He talked about all the great assets the state has and said, “As Leonard Dozier said in his presentation yesterday, they’ve always been here.” I thought that was pretty cool.

Also, a number of people mentioned that we should have had you as the 1st speaker of the day because you were so motivating. You hit a home run brother.

I grew up in Pleasantville and am proud to call New Jersey home.

I want to thank Malachi Oliver, a young man I mentor whom I've brought on to work for me, for his work in documenting this. Robert Williams, my PR man (who truly has more roles than that) and the New Jersey Conference on Tourism for caring enough about our state to keep New Jersey going.

It was one of the great honors of my life to be a part of this.

The Story of Sonny Lea

Though I could not be present at today’s funeral, with the family’s blessings I produced and narrated this short documentary about my dear friend and barber Sonny Lea. This was heavy for me and still is because I saw him just a few days before he passed and as soon as I walked into the shop he said “Doz, I was just thinking about you man.” In my 15 years of him cutting my hair he had never said that to me. I can only wonder but those words ring out to me as I continue to think of him and even grieve. He would often say to me “Doz, you remind me of a younger version of me.” I knew why he felt this way and he made it clear (too much to dive into here) He was one of the greatest men I have ever known and I wanted to use my gifts to celebrate him in the most magnanimous way possible. Thinking of you today my friend on this day so many celebrate you. Please watch below.

Great review of "Christmas Kind of Way"

Great review by Stubby's House of Christmas.

You know Leonard Dozier, even if you don't know that you know him.  OK, maybe not from his days as a high school basketball star in the Cape-Atlantic League.  But certainly you've seen him on stage, in movies, TV shows and commercials.  And, if you're a football fan, you must know Leonard Dozier.  Or at least you know his voice.  One of the top Voice Actor/Voice Over artists in the business, Leonard is one of the voices of NFL Films--the one who got to narrate NFL Films' highlight reel for the Philadelphia Eagles victory in Superbowl LII.  Can you imagine a Christmas record from John Facenda?

The difference between John Facenda and Leonard is that Leonard Dozier has also long been a singer and songwriter.  He's released a couple of albums and a handful of singles to date (my personal favorite of the latter being "Fly", which came out earlier this year).  He's currently working on a new album, "Sunday Word", titled after an inspirational blog Leonard also does (this cat don't ever sleep).  And, though it's a decade old, I specifically want to point you to Leonard's other holiday record, "This Thanksgiving", because, Lord knows, there aren't a whole lotta good Thanksgiving songs out there.

Leonard's Christmas single is "Christmas Kind of Way", released September 16, a smooth soulful slice of mistletoe magic.  There are a couple of things I really like about this holiday ballad.  First, the sax player absolutely kills it.  I don't know who that is but, if he cuts a record of his own, I want to be first in line to buy it.  But, second, Christmas songs are all about the mood, and Christmas covers a lot of moods.  I think, mentally, I jump immediately to either solitary late night snow showers or Christmas morning excitement (complete with kids and chaos).  The romantic songs I mostly think of as falling between those two (e.g. candlelit dinners or evenings cuddling by the fire).  "Christmas Kind of Way" gives me Christmas morning for two people in love--without the kids and the chaos.  I like that.  I like that a lot.  That's a Christmas experience worth experiencing.  And, of course, topping it all off, are you going to complain about vocals from one of the voices of NFL films?  I'm not.

You can find "Christmas Kind of Way" by Leonard Dozier on Bandcamp.  And keep your eyes peeled for "Sunday Word", coming soon.  Leonard's just beginning to hit his stride.

Leonard Dozier is an accomplished actor with stage, TV and film credits and ADDY award-winning voice actor and one of the new voices of the NFL. After years traveling the country hosting seminars as one of the top voice over coaches and producers in the country, his infectious personality, distinguished voice and stage presence and inspirational and visionary speeches began reminding people of our 44th president. His spot-on impersonation of the president has even inspired motivated film directors like Niyi Towalawi:

BUT HERE'S WHY HE HAS BECOME ONE THE HOTTEST NEW SPEAKERS ON THE MARKET:

"Hi Leonard,

Ben Rose, Director of Marketing, Wildwood Convention and Visitors Authority

"One of the most powerful and inspiring speeches and speakers I have ever heard. If there is anyway I can get a copy of the speech I would love to share with my students."
Dana Markowitz, Guidance Counselor, Lowe Cape May Regional High School

"Leonard, thanks for being part of the day and doing an awesome job. Your stories of struggle and triumph were both entertaining and instructive and we all appreciate your willingness to be a part of the Young Leaders’ day."

This was a banner week in my career!

Big week with two deals in place! Deal solidified and I am now represented by one of the largest VO companies in the world. Also congrats on a new music partnership. Now managed by one of the most revered and respected guys in music, Michael Tozzi and Viaggio Entertainment. Of the signings, Leonard states: "In the VO world I have a monster agency behind me and it is nearly 20 years in the making. Musically, I grew up hearing Michael Tozzi all over WJJZ. It's surreal to think that we are working together today and the new album will reflect his and my vision to plant me as the future of smooth jazz and adult contemporary music."
